Mittagong Cluster
The gateway to Southern Highlands food adventure…
Serene Mittagong is nestled between Mount Gibraltar and Mount Alexandra. The hills and hidden away valleys that once harboured notorious bushrangers are today a haven for Apple Thief Cider, outstanding cool climate wines from Tractorless Vineyard and the craft beers of ethical Eden Brewery. A stand-out among the town’s eye-catching sandstone architecture, The Old Bank has been spectacularly transformed into opulent accommodation, with a show-stopping cedar staircase and leather chesterfields, while The Fitzroy Inn is a window to Mittagong’s wild colonial days with historic tours and regular Whiskey nights. Artisan finds include a family-owned olive grove, bee-keeper, the world class craft at Craft and Sturt, Australia’s oldest craft centre, Coffee Culture or the hip Brewsters Record Bar. And a taste of the fresh local harvest, starts with multiple 2019 award winner, The Shaggy Cow, Alpaca tacos and charcuterie at Glass Café and Vegan delights at Four Seasons Bistro or buy direct from the growers at Mittagong Market.

Fitzroy Inn Historic Guest House
The Fitzroy Inn was opened in 1836 as a ‘Traveller’s Inn’, and today the restored building offers Southern Highlands luxury accommodation, and remains operational after almost 170 years providing visitors a unique window into Australia’s colonial past.
The original kitchen in the cellars has been described by some historians as ‘the finest example’ of a convict-era built kitchen remaining in Australia. The ‘water-well’ in the middle of the floor, hand-cut into the shale below the building, is a truly remarkable work of convict masonry and craftsmanship. The convict cell, used to hold prisoners on their way to Berrima Gaol, retains the original iron shackles and hand-turned bars which securely restrained its hapless guests.
